AG’s stand on Prime Minister’s post?
The Office of the Speaker of House says the Attorney General has not issued an interpretation pertaining to the post of the Prime Minister to the Speaker of House.
The Speaker’s Office has issued the statement amidst various media reports that claimed the Attorney General has informed his stance on the post of the Prime Minister to Speaker of House Karu Jayasuriya, who is unwilling to publicise the Attorney General’s stance.
Meanwhile the Speaker has forwarded another letter to President Maithripala Sirisena to immediately reconvene Parliament.
The Speaker noted more than 125 Parliamentarians representing the United National Party, Tamil National Alliance, JVP and the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress have requested the Speaker to take measure to reconvene Parliament.
The stance of the Speaker is that the solution to the existing political crisis can be reached through the recommencement of the Parliamentary session and by deciding the post of the Prime Minister based on the Parliamentary majority.
Speaker of House Karu Jayasuriya further said the prorogation of Parliament for 18 days will tarnish the image of President Maithripala Sirisena who pledged to protect democracy and good governance.
