20A needs a referendum – Bimal Ratnayake
The JVP says the party is of the same stance that the 20th Amendment to the Constitution should be passed through a referendum.
JVP Parliamentarian Bimal Ratnayake said the Supreme Court will issue its interpretation on the matter.
He said as expected a crucial Constitutional Amendment is taking place adding several parties and individuals tabled petitions regarding the 20th Amendment to the Constitution before the Supreme Court.
The MP noted the JVP believes the Supreme Court will table its interpretation in this regard.
MP Ratnayake said the Supreme Court will propose methods that will help pass this amendment claiming one they believe is a two thirds majority, or a public referendum, adding this is something that the Attorney General himself had stated some time ago.
The JVP he said is however of the stance that the Amendment should be discussed among the public and should be consented by the public as well.
The Supreme Court today informed that its interpretation on the 20th Amendment to the Constitution will be submitted to the Speaker of House Karu Jayasuriya.
The announcement was made after eleven petitions filed regarding the 20th Amendment were heard and completed within four days.
