Attention to promotion coconut, kithul, palmyrah and rubber related industries
President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa has pointed out the possibility of opening up a new approach to foreign exchange generation by combining kithul and palmyrah among the major export crops.
The President made this observation at a discussion held at the Presidential Secretariat on the future plans of the State Ministry of Coconut, Kitul, Palmyrah and Rubber Cultivation Promotion and Allied Industrial Production and Export Diversification.
The President instructed that obstacles to the promotion of palmyrah and kithul cultivation be removed and the production process be encouraged.
The President also instructed to set up a separate state institution for kithul and strictly enforce the laws prohibiting the felling of palm trees.
The President also instructed officials to plan goals to be achieved in the short term.
The Presidential Media Unit stated that coconut cultivation should be started soon in identified lands including the North and East.
The President has instructed to increase the annual income from rubber exports to US $ 2000 million and to cultivate rubber instead of phineas in the slopes.
In addition, kithul cultivation will be promoted in landslide affected areas.
It has also been instructed to use the fallow lands identified by the Land Use Department for cultivation.
The discussion also focused on fixing a fixed price for coconut, the Presidential Media Unit said.
