Dissolution drags SL further into turmoil – RW
The leader of the United National Party Ranil Wickremesinghe says the country is in turmoil due to the unconstitutional actions of President Maithripala Sirisena that are also against democracy.
In a special statement Ranil Wickremesinghe said the country’s image has been tarnished as a result of the present crisis.
The UNP leader said the reasons cited by the President for the dissolution of Parliament cannot be accepted.
The leader of the UNP noted that all possible steps will be taken to rid the country of this unfortunate turn of events.
Wickremesinghe said he is willing to face any situation that challenges democracy, the rule of law, civilisation and the supremacy of the people.
The UNP leader added the President violated the Constitution when he issued a gazette notification dissolving Parliament; when the House was due to convene on the 14th of November.
Ranil Wickremesinghe referring to the President’s statement yesterday, during which he named individuals being bought for money, charged that it is in fact the President who should be aware of such financial bribes, claiming it was he who granted Cabinet portfolios.
Wickremesinghe highlighted that the President’s actions have led to the public losing faith in Members of Parliament.
The UNP leader vowed to work towards uplifting the country from the present turmoil adding the party will ensure democracy is upheld adding a Constitution that further protects democracy will be introduced.
