General Election to be called before June 2019?
Leader of the United National Party Ranil Wickremesinghe says steps will be taken to call a General Election prior to the month of June next year following discussions with all political parties.
Ranil Wickremesinghe said following the 26th of October he has proven his majority in Parliament on several occasions.
The leader of the UNP made these statements during a special media briefing with foreign journalists at the Temple Trees yesterday.
Wickremesinghe claimed incidents that occurred over the past three weeks in Parliament were a threat to the Parliamentary system.
The UNP leader stressed he is highly distressed and disappointed over the incidents.
Wickremesinghe also noted his faction lawfully established a government adding he will not further tolerate the country being thrown into turmoil.
Ranil Wickremesinghe meanwhile said he is awaiting a reply from the President to the letter directed by the Speaker of House Karu Jayasuriya.
The leader of the UNP stressed party leaders of the United National Front are prepared to meet the President once again if the need arises.
