The National Police Commission says around 1,100 complaints have been lodged over the past year.
Secretary of the Commission, Ariyadasa Cooray said a majority of complaints were filed on the misconduct of Police Officers.
The Commission said it received numerous complaints of biasness and misuse of power on the part of policemen.
Ariyadasa Cooray stated the Commission was able to look into a majority of the complaints which were filed.
Meanwhile members of the United Nations working group visiting Sri Lanka stated stronger investigations should be carried out over complaints received by the Commission regarding arbitrary arrests and torture.
Speaking at a media briefing in Colombo last evening the officials said the National Police Commission needs to be strengthened.
