The Federation of Information Technology Industry believes social media sites that were temporarily banned will be enabled today.
Chairman Dr. Kithsiri Manchanayake said according to information received the ban will be lifted today.
The ban on Facebook, WhatsApp, Viber and Imo was due to be lifted yesterday.
The Telecommunications Regulatory Commission blocked social media networks across the country in order to prevent the spread of communal violence.
Accordingly, service providers were instructed to restrict internet access in the Kandy District until further notice.
As a result, users across the country experienced a drastic drop in speed and interruptions when accessing the internet.
The Ministry of Defence requested the TRC to identify individuals who are spreading malicious and false information through social media based on the prevailing situation in Kandy.
The police meanwhile said despite the ban on social media sites various individuals resorted to other alternate methods to access social media.
