Chief of Defence Staff Admiral Ravindra Wijegunaratne, who was arrested and subsequently remanded on charges of allegedly harbouring and aiding the main suspect in the 2008 youth abduction case to flee the country, has been released on bail.
The order was issued by Colombo Fort Magistrate Ranga Dissanayake this afternoon.
Admiral Wijegunaratne was released on two surety bail of one million rupees each.
Admiral Ravindra Wijegunaratne surrendered before Court on the 28th of November and was remanded till today.
The Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court previously ordered the arrest of Admiral Wijegunaratne after the CID, investigating the abduction, informed Court that there is sufficient evidence against the Chief of Defence Staff, that he aided the main suspect in the case to evade the law and flee the country.
Upon delivering the Court order the Magistrate ordered Admiral Wijegunaratne to refrain from intimidating witnesses in the case and claimed the order for bail will be revoked if found guilty.
The case will be taken up once again on the 16th of December.
