The Ministry of Health has confirmed that the first patient with the deadly new coronavirus has been identified.
Dr. Sudath Samaraweera, Chief Epidemiologist and Ministry of Health, said that a Chinese woman who arrived in the country from the Hubei Province of China has been admitted to the Angoda Hospital.
It has been revealed that she has been infected with the new coronavirus.
In China alone, 81 people have died of the virus and 2,827 have been confirmed as infected.
Of those, 461 are in critical condition, according to latest Chinese records.
The new coronavirus has been reported in seven Asian countries.
Among them were eight patients from Thailand, four from Singapore, three from Japan, four from Malaysia, two from Vietnam, four from South Korea and one from Nepal.
Foreign media reported that Cambodia was also included in the list following the appointment of a confirmed virus infection.
In addition, new coronavirus infections have been reported in several other countries around the world.
Five were from Australia, five from the United States, three from France and one from Canada.
Meanwhile, all business in the city have been suspended until the 9th of this month, with 53 cases reported in Shanghai, the commercial city of China.
There are currently 660 Sri Lankans living in different parts of China.
Of those, many are facing difficulties with the new coronavirus.
According to reports, 33 Sri Lankans are currently residing in Hubei Province, China’s Wuhan city, which is the most affected by the virus.
In addition, there are 111 Sri Lankans in Henan Province, China, and 39 Sri Lankans in both Jianjiang and Hunan provinces, with the highest incidence of the virus.
Meanwhile, a special passenger terminal has been installed at the Bandaranaike International Airport to check all passengers arriving from the Beijing, Guangzhou, Chengdu and Canton airports in China.
Ambulances are also being prepared to be transported to the National Institute of Infectious Diseases, Angoda if they are detected with coronavirus symptoms at the special passenger terminal.
