US Ambassador Alaina B. Teplitz has left the Ministry of Foreign Relations after meeting with the Minister of Foreign Relations.
According to our correspondent, the ambassador arrived at the Ministry of Foreign Relations at around 12.10 pm and left for about an hour.
The ambassador was summoned to announce the government’s response to the US visa ban on Army Commander Lieutenant General Shavendra Silva.
Foreign Relations Minister Dinesh Gunawardena said yesterday that she had been invited to the Ministry of Foreign Relations at around 9.00 am
US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said in a tweet recently that Shavendra Silva has been disqualified from entering the United States because of alleged human-rights killings during the Sri Lankan civil war.
The Sri Lankan government, however, stressed that the US State Department strongly condemned the move.
The Ministry of Foreign Relations said it was asking the United States to reconsider its decision based on unconfirmed sources.
