The United Kingdom has commended Sri Lanka for co-sponsoring a new resolution at the United Nations Human Rights Council last month, to continue the reconciliation and accountability commitments.
The UK presented a new resolution on Sri Lanka during the recently concluded 40th regular session of the UNHRC session pertaining to reconciliation and accountability commitments.
The government also co-sponsored the resolution. UK Minister of State for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office Mark Field speaking in Parliament said, the UK will continue to urge Sri Lanka to implement fully its commitments under UNHRC resolutions.
Responding to an oral question at the British Parliament, State Minister Mark Field said, “I reiterate the earlier comments of my right hon. Friend the Foreign Secretary.
We welcome Sri Lanka’s co-sponsorship of a new resolution of the UNHRC in March, which continues its reconciliation and accountability commitments.
As a penholder, the UK has played a leading role in trying to bring the parties together, but while we accept that positive steps have been taken, much faster progress is needed.
We shall continue to urge Sri Lanka to implement fully its commitments under UNHRC resolutions 30/1 and 34/1.”
