No electricity tariff hike
The government says it will not increase electricity tariffs despite the recent fuel price revision in the country.
Minster of Power and Renewable Energy Ranjith Siyambalapitiya said despite a rapid increase in the world oil prices, the government will not burden the public by increasing electricity tariffs.
Minister Siyambalapitiya added that the government hopes to implement a mechanism for the benefit of the public during a fuel price hike in the international market.
The Minister said, “We determine the electricity tariffs after considering the impact on the general public. We are not intending on burdening the consumers. The Ceylon Electricity Board is not a commercial entity. We are a one of the country’s biggest public social welfare entity. We have six million consumers. Nearly half of the consumers receive our service for less than our production cost. So we will continue to provide concessions to the general public.”
