Sri Lanka’s third international airport, the Jaffna Palali Airport was declared open by President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe today.
An Indian Airlines flight from Chennai to Jaffna arrived at the Jaffna International Airport today, symbolizing the opening of the airport.
The airport cost Rs. 2250 million, which includes Indian assistance of Rs 300 million.
The airport also has one terminal building, an air traffic control room, a fire station and an office building complex, which is expected to extend its runway from 950 meters to 1,400 meters.
Air India Alliance’s ATR-72, with the first flight between Jaffna and Chennai, landed at Jaffna International Airport at 10.00 am today.
Allianz Air India today marked the start of its first international flight.
In the first phase, flights between the two countries will be three times per week.
