Seal on Polgahawela TNL TV transmission condemned
The Telecommunication Regulatory Commission’s move to seal the Polgahawela Transmission Centre of TNL Television was widely condemned in Parliament today.
The topic was brought to discussion by United People’s Freedom Alliance Parliamentarian Wimal Weerawansa who questioned media freedom.
MP Weerawansa said TNL TV has shared that its Polgahawela Transmission Centre has been sealed by the TRC, and that steps are being taken to remove equipment, and highlighted that they have also made relevant payments and condemned such a move.
The MP noted a serious reason must be behind for the TRC to seal a transmission centre.
However MP Weerawansa said on the surface a critical reason cannot be witnessed adding there was a recent news item aired criticising the President’s comments on the 100 day programme, that could have led to the tranmission centre being sealed.
MP Wimal Weerawansa noted a government who came into power by boasting of media freedom, regardless of who the institution belongs too or what its actions may be, such arbitrary actions cannot be approved.
Minister of Mass media Mangala Samaraweera responding highlighted the importance of media freedom and expressed his disappointment at the turn of events.
State Minister Dr. Harsha de Silva taking the floor reminded President Maithripala Sirisena of the importance of upholding democracy and media freedom.
TNL Television today on its official Facebook page noted that their transmission offices in Polgahawela were sealed by the TRC at a time that all payments were made and that steps were being taken by the TRC to remove equipment of its office in Polgahawela.
