State Employees Must Not Violate Laws -Deshapriya
The Chairman of the Elections Commission Mahinda Deshapriya says the Commission will remain on alert regarding government employees violating election laws.
Speaking at a media breifing yesterday the Chairman of Elections said state official cannot misuse their official positions.
Deshapriya said state officials are barred from carrying out promotional and campaigning activities during office hours.
The Chairman noted even, off-duty state officials cannot use their ranks for political campaigns adding the Commission had received complaints pertaining to the matter.
Mahinda Deshapriya stressed state officials lose their political rights when they join the state service adding they should be mindful about such measures.
The Chairman of the Elections Commission also commented on allegations that unsuitable candidates have been fielded for the upcoming Local Government Election.
Deshapriya said the Commission cannot reject nominations based on petitions adding it could only be implemented through a legal process.
The Chairman noted representatives can only be unseated through a judicial mechanism.
He added in the case of Geetha Kumarasinghe, it was the court that decided the outcome.
The Chairman said the Commission cannot unseat an elected representative as it has no provisions to do so.
