Suspend the ban on Facebook
The government has decided to suspend the Ban of the Facebook social network.
This was in response to a discussion between the members of Facebook’s Facebook and Presidential Secretary Austin Fernando this morning following the instructions of President Maithripala Sirisena.
The president has said in a Twitter message that the decision was taken on the consent of the representatives of Facebook that they would remove hate statements.
Accordingly, the President has informed the Telecommunication Regulatory Commission to suspend the ban on facebook immediately.
On my instructions, my secretary has discussed with officials of Facebook, who have agreed that its platform will not be used for spreading hate speech and inciting violence. As such, I instructed TRCSL to remove the temporary ban on Facebook with immediate effect.
