University Non-academic staff suspend strike

The university non-academic staff have decided to suspend their strike action which affected the functions of the state universities for more than a month.

The strike was launched citing six demands including a monthly allowance.

Examinations at all the state universities were postponed and all other day-to-day activities have affected.

As a result university student unions also staged protests, demanding that the universities be re-opened after solving the issues of non-academic staff.

University non-academic employees’ Trade Unions’ Joint Committee and Higher Education Minister Kabir Hashim held a discussion yesterday (Apr. 02).

Union co-chairman Edward Malwatthage said they are planning to resume work from tomorrow.

Meanwhile, the airport staff who staged a demonstration at the BIA premises yesterday say if they do not get a favourable response to their demands by 11 am today, the employees will launch a strike action.

The employees of Mattala and Ratmalana airports have said that they would also join the strike action.
