Wavy type disturbance in the vicinity of Sri Lanka

Weather forecast for 11th march 2018 (Issued at 05.30 a.m. on 11th March 2018)

Due to the wavy type disturbance in the vicinity of Sri Lanka, cloudy skies and showery conditions are expected to continue over most parts of the island.

Strong gusty winds (up to 50-60 kmph) can expect particularly over Southern province and in Mannar district. Fairly strong gusty winds (up to 40-50kmph) are likely elsewhere

Heavy falls (above 100 mm) can be expected at some places particularly in Southern, Uva and Eastern provinces and in Matale and Polonnaruwa districts.

Fairly heavy falls (about 75mm) can be expected at some places in Sabaragamuwa province and in Kaluthara district.

There may be temporary localized strong winds during thundershowers. General public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by lightning activity.

Weather forecast for sea areas around the island during next 24 hours (Issued at 05.30 a.m. on11thMarch 2018)

Due to the active cloudiness in the South-western, Southern and South-eastern sea areas, the possibility for heavy showers/thundershowers and sudden roughness, associated with sudden increase of wind speed (up to 70-80 kmph) in the sea areas off the coast extending from Kaluthara to Batticaloa via Galle, Hambantota and Potuvil is high.

Showers or thundershowers will occur at times in the sea areas around the island

Winds will be north-easterly in direction and wind speed will be 30-40kmph.

Wind speed can increase up to 50-60 kmph in the sea areas off the coast extending from Jaffna to Negombo via Puttalam and the sea area off the coast extending from Galle to Potuvil via Hambantota.

Temporarily very strong gusty winds and very rough seas can be expected during thundershowers

(Naval and fishing communities are requested to be vigilant in this regards)

Due to the wavy type disturbance in the vicinity of Sri Lanka, showery condition is expected to continue over the island (particularly in the southern half of the island).

Cloudy skiesand fairly strong gusty winds (up to 40-45 kmph) can be expected over the island.

Showers or thundershowers will occur at times in the Eastern, Uva and southern provinces and in the Polonnaruwa and Matale districts.

Showers or thundershowers will occur elsewhere after 2.00pm.

Showers can be expected in the coastal areas of Kaluthara district during the morning too.

Heavy falls (about 100 mm) can be expected at some places particularly in Uva, Sabaragamuwa and Southern provinces and in Ampara, Batticaloa and Kaluthara districts.
