Political coup has been defeated – JVP
The JVP says the Supreme Court verdict today is indication that the coup initiated by President Maithripala Sirisena and Mahinda Rajapaksa has been defeated.
Leader of the JVP MP Anura Kumara Dissanayake speaking to media said today’s verdict is an indication that the President should abide by the Constitution when governing the country.
The Parliamentarian noted the was coup carried out to fulfil personal agendas of Mahinda Rajapaksa and Maithripala Sirisena adding the UPFA faction attempted to govern the country as a playhouse.
MP Dissanayake stressed a country being governed by an illegal government is worse than a country not having a government at all.
He added the Supreme Court issued an important verdict today claiming the President cannot dissolve Parliament prior to the completion of four and a half years and therefore it has been proven that the President should abide by the Constitution when governing the country according to his oath.
The JVP Leader claimed the President has violated the Constitution over nine times by carrying out his duties disregarding the Constitution.
Anura Kumara Dissanayake stated that President Sirisena is responsible of protecting and upholding the Constitution and urged the Head of State not to lead the country into destitution, inconvenience the public and to be singled out by the international community.
