Won’t discuss 20A with groups against it – JVP
The JVP says they will not hold discussions regarding the 20th Constitutional Amendment with groups that are against the abolishment of the Executive Presidency.
Parliamentarian Sunil Handunnetti said the 20th Amendment will be discussed with all parties that are of the stance that the Executive Presidency must be abolished.
The leaders of the Joint Opposition who convened yesterday unanimously decided to reject the 20th Constitutional Amendment tabled by the JVP.
Speaking regarding the JO’s decision MP Sunil Handunnetti said the JVP is prepared to hold discussions regarding the party’s recommendations on the 20th Amendment adding this stance was made clear from the start.
The MP said even before the 20th Amendment was tabled in Parliament several groups attempted to create false fears over its implementation.
He further noted there are also groups that claim they do not approve of the 20th Amendment and that the Executive Presidency must be maintained.
He stated the JVP does not have anything to discuss with such groups.
However he noted if they wish to discuss the 20th amendment the JVP is prepared to hold talks and agree to accept good and reasonable amendments in this regard.
