Electoral method must be amended – PM
Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe says the government is contemplating amending the existing electoral method, prior to holding Provincial Council elections.
Prime Minister Wickremesinghe attributed the decision to the skewed results at the recently concluded Local Authorities Elections.
Premier Wickremesinghe addressing a gathering at Temple Trees said last evening said the election, under the mixed electoral system did not deliver a clear public mandate.
The Prime Minister said required amendments must be made before the forthcoming Provincial council elections.
The Premier noted as a result of the existing electoral system several Local Government bodies are unstable adding there are several Local Authorities which have yet been unable to select their Chairmen.
Prime Minister Wickremesinghe said in some Local Government bodies when the numbers are scrutinized a majority of votes have been limited to one or two people adding it is possible that even before 4 years have passed issues may arise.
The Premier said therefore the government has decided to look into this election method.
Premier Wickremesinghe stated whilst the government’s objective will be to provide all parties with the necessary representation, it is also to maintain stability in all Pradeshiya Sabha and Urban Councils.
The Prime Minister said serious concerns remain as to whether that stability has been ensured through this system.
