‘JO must be acknowledged as official opposition’
United Peoples Freedom Alliance Parliamentarian Dullas Alahapperuma says a decision has been reached to call for the Speaker of House to acknowledge the Joint Opposition as the official Opposition in Parliament.
Speaking at a media briefing in Colombo MP Alahapperuma said the Joint Opposition has claimed a majority at the 2018 Local Authority Election.
The MP addressed the Speaker on the request the Joint Opposition made three years ago to be accepted as the official Opposition in Parliament.
MP Alahapperuma recalled the Speaker claiming the Joint Opposition were still with the United Peoples Freedom Alliance in the first year and therefore it could not be considered.
The MP claimed the Joint Opposition voted against the Budget and had then told him to accept them as the Opposition however they weren’t accepted.
The Parliamentarian said the Joint Opposition have proven their majority now that they’ve faced an election, claiming that the speaker has to accept their request.
MP Alahapperuma further remarked according to the results of the 2018 Local Authority Election, the Sri Lanka Freedom Party led by President Maithripala Sirisena and the United Peoples Freedom Alliance have suffered massive defeats.
The MP said the people’s mandate has several faces pointing out that the had President lost in his own district.
MP Alahapperuma also pointed out that except for four Cabinet Ministers, all other Cabinet Ministers lost in their wards and with the exception of two State Ministers all other State Ministers lost in their wards as well.
The MP continued to point out that all district leaders, the SLFP and UPFA General Secretaries lost their wards and the district and wards organised by Chandrika Bandaranayke also lost.
The Parliamentarian said the state of the loss is evident and concluded saying the Executive President of the country only gained 16% of the total vote.
