The Joint Opposition has appointed a committee to compile a report pertaining to the group operating independently in Parliament.
The committee was appointed last evening during a meeting of party leaders representing the Joint Opposition chaired by former President Parliamentarian Mahinda Rajapaksa.
Leader of the Sri Lanka Podu Jana Peramuna Professor G.L Peiris was appointed to head the committee.
Parliamentarian Vasudeva Nanayakkara said the relevant report is expected to be compiled and submitted within a period of one month.
He said the 70 member Parliamentary group decided to appoint a committee for their expert knowledge and legal grounds and called a report.
MP Nanayakkara noted once their report is submitted the group will decide if it will operate independently in Parliament, adding the JO also discussed the demarcation report that will be tabled in Parliament.
He stressed if it is not passed with a two thirds majority in Parliament then the election will be held under the old electoral system.
