The alms giving was held at the Abhayaramaya in Narahenpita today to mark the 74th birthday of the opposition leader Mahinda Rajapaksa.
The alms giving was held under the patronage of Ven. Muruththettuwe Ananda Thero, Chief Incumbent of Abhayarama Vihara, Narahenpita.
Opposition Leader Mahinda Rajapaksa and several others participated in the occasion.
Opposition Leader Mahinda Rajapaksa responded to a question posed by journalists at that time.
Journalist: What is the current position of the Prime Minister?
Mahinda Rajapaksa: Ranil Wickremesinghe is still the Prime Minister of this government. I think the best option here is to get people’s ideas. Half of the cabinet has already resigned. We are keeping a close watch on the situation.
journalist: What is your opinion on the presidential election?
Mahinda Rajapaksa: It’s a fair election. We thank the Election Commission for having a peaceful election. So is the media.
Journalist: Isn’t there a split between two communities in this election?
Mahinda Rajapaksa: It looks like that, but it doesn’t have to be.
Journalist: Will the PC election be held first, or the general election first?
Mahinda Rajapaksa: Let’s see about that. I think it is best to hold general elections first. Isn’t it?
Journalist: We see some UNP members willing to work with you.
Mahinda Rajapaksa: Yes
Journalist: Are you ready to give them a chance at the next election?
Mahinda Rajapaksa: We look into it, have discussions, and act accordingly. We also intend to win it.
Journalist: How long does it take to develop this country?
Mahinda Rajapaksa: We should start our work as soon as possible. That is what has happened. But this cannot be done because there are two governments. The President is from one party, the Prime Minister and the Cabinet from another party. They should accept the mandate of the people and allow one party to rule this nation. That’s the only way to do it.
