President Maithripala Sirisena says several opportunities to strengthen the Police Department in the past have been delayed.
Speaking at an event the President said much work remains to be accomplished to improve the Police service.
The President said two months have passed since the Police fell under his purview, however adding he witnessed that much work that could have and should have been carried out for the sake of strengthening the Police has been neglected.
The President said he believed that in the past 15-20 years the Ministers under who the Police fell only accepted the role as a formality.
President Sirisena said many steps to strengthen, increase efficiency and deliver higher standards for the Police service have been neglected and delayed.
He when the Police work to suppress vile criminals some human rights activists raise their swords.
The Head of State raised the question as to how many politicians in the country speak up against the illegal narcotics trade and drug smugglers.
