President backed NCM against the Premier – JVP
The JVP says the President backed the No-Confidence Motion tabled against the Prime Minister.
Speaking at a function in Badulla Parliamentarian Vijitha Herath claimed the No-Confidence Motion was tabled by President Maithripala Sirisena as the Head of State was unable to remove the Prime Minister from his post under the 19th Constitutional Amendment enacted by a democratic faction.
However MP Herath said under former President JR Jayewardene’s constitution, an Executive President could remove a Prime Minister.
The Parliamentarian claimed the President sought the Attorney General’s opinion on the matter adding the Attorney General confirmed that the President cannot remove the Prime Minister.
MP Vijitha Herath noted claims were made stating former President Mahinda Rajapaksa.
The Parliamentarian stressed however it was a move by President Maithripala Sirisena’s faction.
MP Vijitha Herath charged the Joint Opposition attempted to gain political benefits through the No-Confidence Motion.
He claimed the Joint Opposition wanted to defect from the government adding former President Mahinda Rajapaksa wanted to make use of the opportunity after the Local Authority Election.
MP Herath claimed the No-Confidence Motion was not against any wrongdoing but a political conspiracy to gain power.
