President Maithripala Sirisena says his policy is to have both state and private universities in every subject area.
The President said that the standard and quality of education that exist in the state universities is compulsory in the same way that non-governmental universities exist.
The President was addressing a gathering of medical students and parents who had been absorbed into the Sir John Kotelawala Defense University at the Nelum Pokuna Theater yesterday.
The President added that over Rs. 800 billion annually spend as foreign exchange for students studying in foreign countries.
The President pointed out that the competitiveness of education cannot be interrupted and the education system should be developed to overcome this challenge.
The President said that over the past few years, some have led university students to fulfill their narrow political interests.
He said he was committed to protecting those students and solving their problems.
The President said that the children of the country are considered their own children and the rulers should love the children of the country just as parents love their children.
The President said that it was a tragedy for some doctors and engineers to leave the country before they were appointed.
The President explained the importance of educating the students in higher education to love the country as well as the responsibilities of the country.
