The Ministry of Law and Order has announced that special security measures will be taken to provide security to the four candidates contesting the Presidential election.
A senior spokesperson of the ministry said that, on the instructions of the IGP, new security coordinators have been appointed for the protection of the candidates under the approval of the National Police Commission.
It is reported that intelligence units have informed the police and the Election Commission to provide special security to presidential candidates Gotabhaya Rajapaksa, Sajith Premadasa, Anura Kumara Dissanayake and Mahesh Senanayake.
Accordingly, two senior Superintendents of Police and two Superintendents of Police will be appointed as new Security Coordinators for these candidates, the Ministry of Law and Order said.
President Maithripala Sirisena has also advised at the Security Council meeting held recently to pay more attention to the security of presidential candidates.
