Tech experts needed to resolve fraud cases
Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka says technical experts must be consulted to assist and fast track investigating cases of serious financial fraud.
Speaking during the debate on the Judicature amendment bill in Parliament yesterday the Minister said neither the police, Attorney General’s Department or Auditor General’s Department can resolve massive cases of financial fraud which were committed in the past in the highways, power and petroleum sectors on their own.
Minister Ranawaka said the cases were complex, high tech, white collar crimes adding therefore as long as technological experts are not called in to assist in the technical aspect of the investigation, these cases will not be resolved.
He noted in the past 24 years only four people have faced the law adding one of the main reasons is that skilled technical experts are not involved in the process, therefore many slip through the grasp of the law.
Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka proposed that the Minister of Justice, the Chief Justice and all other relevant legal parties work together to address this lack of high tech assistance in such cases.
