The Joint Opposition claims the impending Provincial Council Elections can been held under the provisions stipulated in the Provincial Elections Act, prior to the recent amendment.
United People’s Freedom Alliance Parliamentarian Vasudeva Nanayakkara said members of the Joint Opposition have urged the Elections Commission to hold the impending polls promptly.
When inquire by NewsRadio, MP Vasudeva Nanayakkara said a group of MPs met the Chairman of Elections Mahinda Deshapriya yesterday in a bid to raise concerns pertaining to the delay.
He said they have made clarifications to the Elections Commission pertaining to the delay to conduct the Provincial Council Elections.
MP Vasudeva Nanayakkara said the recent amendment to the Act has no bearing to conduct the election, under the previous electoral method.
MP Nanayakkara noted that the Chairman of Elections had taken their concerns into consideration and expects to arrive at a decision promptly to conduct the elections.
