President calls inquiry into tear gas attack
President Maithripala Sirisena has called for immediate action to conduct an inquiry against the persons responsible for issuing instructions to fire tear gas at a group of protesters of the Bodu Bala Sena organisation, outside the Presidential Secretariat in Colombo, Fort.
The President’s Media Division said the relevant orders were issued to the respective units.
President Sirisena expressed his apologies over the inconvenience caused to the Buddhist monks due to the tear gas attack.
The President later met the group and accepted a letter by the group over the judicial matters pertaining to Venerable Galagodaththe Gnanasara Thera.
The protesters were demanding the release of the General Secretary of the organisation venerable Galagodaththe Gnanasara thera.
Galagodaththe Gnanasara thera was convicted on four charges over Contempt of Court and was sentenced to a 19 year rigorous imprisonment, to be completed in 6 years.
Police fired tear gas and water cannons to disperse the group of protesters engaged in the demonstration outside the Presidential Secretariat this afternoon.
