Athletics is rumored to be launching an artificial track that is not suitable for Bogambara Stadium in Kandy, which is the main sports stadium in the province.
It is reported that the Ministry of Sports has appointed a committee to set up an artificial track which is a world renowned brand used for world class tournaments.
Some say that the use of these tracks for major tournaments such as the Olympics would be unusable for about two years and would have to be removed.
However, a senior official from the Department of Sports Development said that the proposed track has no faults and is faster than the rest.
“It was a track called Sugathadasa Stadium that was built by President Premadasa in 1991. It used to be seven years. It was removed in 1998, ”
the official added.
The stadium has become the main training center for the All Island Athletics Championship as well as the Central Province. In spite of this, the sports ministry alleges that it is more useful to have a longer runway.
“School athletes who make the most use of Bogambara Stadium. They can’t train on a track like this. It would be a waste of money if the stadium were to be run on such a competitive, short life span,”
said an athletic expert.
A senior official from the Ministry of Sports said that the track is being given to Bogambara at the request of the athletes.
“The athletes who go to the games and fail are saying that they have not been trained on a race track. But when I asked a veteran athlete like Susanthika, she said, they can’t say like that.”
the higher official said.
