Sri Lanka’s third match of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 against Pakistan was washed out after continuous rain in Bristol on Friday.
The rain continued to pour down into the afternoon before it eased off around 2.00pm (UK time), but the match officials later decided the outfield was too wet and risky for any play when the match was abandoned at 3.45pm (UK time).
Interestingly, Sri Lanka moved up the points table to sit at the number 3 position, while Pakistan moved up to 4th place, though it is still very early in the tournament.
Sri Lanka scraped past Afghanistan who gave them a scare before going down by 34 runs (D/L) in their last game, while Pakistan shocked tournament favorites England before the washout today.
Pakistan had also won seven out of seven in World Cups against Sri Lanka and were the much-fancied team coming into today’s game, before the heavens opened up meaning no play was possible.
Meanwhile the Sri Lankan middle order has been out of sorts during the tournament so far, with Kusal Mendis, Angelo Mathews and Dhananjaya de Silva struggling for form.
The bowlers delivered the goods in their last game as Nuwan Pradeep captured 4/31 – his career-best figures – while Lasith Malinga polished off the tail ending up with three wickets.
Sri Lanka’s next game will be on Tuesday, 11th June, against the high-riding Bangladeshi’s, who beat South Africa in their 1st game before going down in a nail-biter against New Zealand.
