United People’s Freedom Alliance Parliamentarian Dilum Amunugama has accused the Sri Lanka Freedom Party faction within the Unity Government of destroying the SLFP. Speaking to media in Kandy, MP Amunugama said a continuing partnership with the United National Party will be dire for the SLFP. Rejecting speculation, he said the Sri Lanka Podujana Permuna is not hopeful of gaining the Prime Ministerial post following success at the Local Authority Election. The Parliamentarian noted the Local Authority Election was not a struggle to gain the Prime Ministerial post adding however it was a struggle against the Unity Government and corruption.

‘Public against govt’s failure to act against corruption’

General Secretary of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party Minister Duminda Dissanayake says the public voted against the government in the 2018 Local Authority Election as the government had failed to act swiftly against corruption. Speaking at a media briefing yesterday the Minister said the public’s message to the government is clear. Minister Dissanayake noted during both the 2015 Presidential Election and during the Local Authority Election the President spoke of ending corruption adding there is no longer any point in simply speaking of ending corruption. The Minister stated the public called for the government to bring the perpetrators to book. Minister Duminda Dissanayake stressed the public’s message to the government is that the it must act against corruption immediately.

‘JO must be acknowledged as official opposition’

United Peoples Freedom Alliance Parliamentarian Dullas Alahapperuma says a decision has been reached to call for the Speaker of House to acknowledge the Joint Opposition as the official Opposition in Parliament. Speaking at a media briefing in Colombo MP Alahapperuma said the Joint Opposition has claimed a majority at the 2018 Local Authority Election. The MP addressed the Speaker on the request the Joint Opposition made three years ago to be accepted as the official Opposition in Parliament. MP Alahapperuma recalled the Speaker claiming the Joint Opposition were still with the United Peoples Freedom Alliance in the first year and therefore it could not be considered. The MP claimed the Joint Opposition voted against the Budget and had then told him to accept them as the Opposition however they weren’t accepted. The Parliamentarian said the Joint Opposition have proven their majority now that they’ve faced an election, claiming that the speaker has to accept their request. MP Alahapperuma further remarked according to the results of the 2018 Local Authority Election, the Sri Lanka Freedom Party led by President Maithripala Sirisena and the United Peoples Freedom Alliance have suffered massive defeats. The MP said the people’s mandate has several faces pointing out that the had President lost in his own district. MP Alahapperuma also pointed out that except for four Cabinet Ministers, all other Cabinet Ministers lost in their wards and with the exception of two State Ministers all other State Ministers lost in their wards as well. The MP continued to point out that all district leaders, the SLFP and UPFA General Secretaries lost their wards and the district and wards organised by Chandrika Bandaranayke also lost. The Parliamentarian said the state of the loss is evident and concluded saying the Executive President of the country only gained 16% of the total vote.
