Today marks 15 years since the Tsunami – Two minutes silence at 9.25 am

Today marks 15 years since the 2004 tsunami, one of the deadliest and most devastating natural disasters in the world, which devastated more than 10 countries in the Indian Ocean.

The Disaster Management Center has called for a two minute silence from 9.25 am to 9.27 am this morning to commemorate the deaths of thousands of deadly tornadoes in Sri Lanka.

On December 26, 2004, at about 8:00 am, a 9.1 magnitude earthquake in the Indian Ocean 160 kilometers off the coast of Sumatra, unleashed a 30-meter water wall to ocean.

In the hours that followed, a tsunami spread across the Indian Ocean, killing nearly 230,000 people.

More than 40,000 people in Sri Lanka were killed and property worth millions of rupees were destroyed by the tsunami.
