Flaws Found In WPC’s Report On Luxury Chairs

Western Province Governor Hemakumara Nanayakkara says that the report submitted by the committee appointed to probe the preparation to purchase chairs for the Western Provincial Council, worth about Rs. 640,000 each, found to be flawed.

The Governor said the report should be analyzed in detail.

The committee appointed to probe the matter submitted the report to the Provincial Governor yesterday.

The JVP Provincial Councillor Lakshman Nipunaarachchi had made a complaint that 125 chairs were in the process of being procured from Belgium, for the provincial council’s new building complex.

Subsequently, the governor halted the purchase and appointed a five-member committee to probe the matter.

The committee’s report was submitted to provincial secretary Pradeep Yasaratna on Tuesday.

The production cost of each chair imported from Belgium quoted at Rs. 640,000 was to be Rs. 290,000.

A tax of Rs. 197,000 has been added to each chair.
