The Indian Supreme Court today banned the cutting of trees in Mumbai for a Metro rail project.
The court has ordered the project to be implemented while protecting the green environment. A group of students told the Attorney General that the project be halted. The Supreme Court today ordered the Maharashtra state government to stop the felling of trees.
More than 2100 trees are to be cut for the project, which will be carried out in a forested area in Mumbai.
More than 1,500 trees have already been cut down. A tense situation erupted among Indian students and police when the trees were cut down.
